Aquaculture is the term used for the farming and husbandry of aquatic plants and animals for commercial, recreational and scientific purposes. A wide range of activities are included in this category, such as the farming of Fish, Molluscs, Crustaceans and aquatic plants.

Aquaculture is a diverse industry that also includes production for: supplying other aquaculture operations, use by the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, ornamental purposes, stocking sport fisheries and for producing aquatic bait animals.

The farming of fish, molluscs and crustaceans are mostly carried out for human consumption. These productions can occur both in natural waters and in artificial aquatic compounds.

Aquaculture has a long history throughout the world with the first records of fish farming dating back 4000 years to China; farming of oysters is said to go back to 2000BC in Japan and 100BC by the Romans.

 

Aquaculture has been the worlds fastest growing food production system for the past decade. In the long run, only time will tell if the aquatic herbivores/omnivores will out perform and out live the carnivores in the global race for food production and food security.
